Handmade retablos and bultos were such an integral part of the lives of Spanish New Mexicans until they were replaced by plaster saints and European lithographs transported by way of the Santa Fe Trail or in greater quantities by rail.  We try to find examples of the work of the New Mexican Santeros dating from the late 18th century through the work of Jose Benito Ortega in the late 19th century. Work by 20th century artists/santeros. Applegate, Celso Gallegos, Patrocinio Barela and the Lopezes of Cordova, and others, are a focus of our search for interesting pieces.
